MSP (Management Successful Programme)

The MSP framework is designed to enable the delivery of transformational change and the achievement of an organization’s strategic objectives. Programs exist in the tension zone between the strategic direction of the organization, the delivery of change capability by projects, and the need to maintain business performance and stability while realizing and exploiting the benefits from the investments

The MSP framework is based on three core concepts:

1. MSP Principles: These are derived from positive and negative lessons learned from program experiences. They are the common factors that underpin the success of any transformational change.
2. MSP Governance Themes: These define an organization’s approach to program management. They allow an organization to put in place the right leadership, delivery team, organization structures, and controls, giving the best chance for success.
3. MSP Transformational Flow: This provides a route through the lifecycle of a program from its conception through to the delivery of the new capability, outcomes, and benefits.

Types of programs

A program can be triggered in several ways; each will require a different focus and intensity of resources and control.
●Vision-led programs that start with a clearly defined vision, have a top-down approach and focus on the strategic or innovative opportunity with a radical transformation of business, culture, or both.
●Emergent programs evolve from current uncoordinated initiatives, where there is recognition of the value of a joined-up approach with an emergent vision and end goal.
●Compliance programs can also be called ‘must-do’ programs. The organization has no choice but to change; for example, because of market forces or the potential negative impact of not changing.
Unlike project management, which thrives on certainty, program management recognizes and exploits the ambiguity within which it exists.
MSP Principles

The MSP framework outlines seven principles:

1. Remaining aligned with corporate strategy
2. Leading change
3. Envisioning and communicating a better future
4. Focusing on the benefits and threats to them
5. Adding value
6. Designing and delivering a coherent capability
7. Learning from experience

The Principles in Managing Successful Programmes advise how to:

  1. Manage a business case for the programme
    2. Organise people to ensure responsibilities and lines of communication are clear
    3. Plan the work in a way which achieves results
    4. Ensure that the organisation does benefit from undertaking the programme
    5. Ensure that all interested parties (the stakeholders) are involved
    6. Resolve issues which arise
    7.identify and manage risks
    8. Ensure quality
    9. Keep up-to-date information which tracks the continually changing environment
    10. Audit a programme to ensure standards are being followed

The Processes in Managing Successful Programmes describe how to:

  1. Identify the aim of the programme and envisaged benefits to the organisation
    2. Define the programme, and specify how the organisation will be different afterwards
    3. Define and implement the governance requirements for the programme
    4. Monitor and coordinate the projects within a programme to a successful conclusion
    5. Manage the transition between the ‘old’ and ‘new’ ways of working, ensuring benefit
    6. Close the programme and ensure the ‘end goal’ has been achieved

The objectives, or goals, of the programme are typically at a strategic level so that the organisation can achieve benefits and improvements in its business operation.

 
 

About the Managing Successful Programmes (MSP®) practitioner

We will provide you with a voucher to book the exam with an Institution partner on a date of your choice. You can sit the exam remotely at your office or home (camera and microphone required).

You’ll have six months access to the eLearning and an exam voucher to sit the accredited MSP exam.
